B12: Essential vitamin for energy production

B12: Essential vitamin for energy production

Form:       Methylcobalamin
Dosage:   400 mcg

Vitamin B12 is produced by bacteria. Some animals have this bacteria living in their gut, which is where omnivores get it. So, individuals who follow a vegan diet that doesn't include animal products may be vulnerable to B12 deficiency and need to supplement their diet.

Vitamin B12 is needed for blood formation and cell division. B12 deficiency is a very serious problem and can lead to anemia and irreversible nerve damage.

While some fortified foods contain B12, like nutritional yeast, they don’t contain a significant enough amount. To get B12 from B12 fortified foods, you would need to eat them as many as two or three times per day, every day.

Omega-3: Helps with brain development

Omega-3: Helps with brain development

Form:         Algae Oil
Dosage:     650 mg

Omega 3s are polyunsaturated fatty acids your body needs and cannot produce. Studies have found that vegans commonly have lower blood concentrations of these fatty acids.

The three main fatty acides are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Foods like Chia and Flax seeds contain ALA, which can then be converted into EPA and DHA. However, it can be hard to consistently fit these into your diet, and the process of converting ALA into EPA and DHA can be inefficient, which is why we include an EPA and DHA-rich Omega-3, made from algae.

When most people think of Omega-3 they think of fish-oil, but the fish get these nutrients from algae. So why not go straight to the source?

Vitamin D: Essential for bone health

Vitamin D: Essential for bone health

Form:           Vitashine(R) Vitamin D3 as Cholecalciferol
Dosage:       2000IU

Vitamin D deficiency is common, especially in people whose exposure to sunlight is limited. In the EPIC-Oxford study, vegans had the lowest mean intake of vitamin D, a value one-fourth the mean intake of omnivores.

There are two major types of Vitamin D: D2 and D3. Vitamin D2 is not as bioavailable as vitamin D3, which means your body cannot use it as readily. Vitamin D3 is what we get from the sun, but if you’re unable to spend 20 minutes a day under direct sunlight (without sunblock), then supplementation may be necessary. Fortunately, even if your vitamin D levels are sufficient, supplementation is considered harmless.

Vitamin D3 supplements are typically made from lanolin, from sheep. However, for vegans, there is a lichen extract called Vitashine, which is what we include in our multivitamin. The sheep can keep their wool!

We Believe The Future Is Vegan

Hey, we’re Alex, Eliot and Shaun, old friends, vegans and the founders of Future Kind. Our mission is simple: to help the world transition to a plant-based diet in order to end the suffering of animals, help fight climate change and to become a healthier and happier race. Our multivitamin is designed to help vegans thrive, while our Future Kind Fund will help us spread awareness.

Three years ago after learning about the realities of animal agriculture, we became vegan. Initially we were overwhelmed by the conflicting health advice we received on supplementation, and so we set out to clarify exactly what we needed to take.

Here we are together in Bali in 2017 planning on how to turn our passion into our business.

Through our research, we discovered that a lot of advice vegans receive on supplementation is incorrect. We discovered that even doctors, while well intentioned, typically have inadequate nutrition training, meaning their advice isn't always correct.

In the end, after combing through scientific studies, we found that there are three key nutrients that most vegans would benefit from supplementing: B12, Omega 3 and D3.

However, finding these products made from vegan ingredients is both challenging and expensive. Even when we did find them, they often contained numerous artificial ingredients. It can also be hard to keep track of when and how many pills you're meant to take.

Co-Founder Shaun taking a break in Montana, while travelling around the U.S. searching for high quality sources of B12, Omega-3 and D3.

After making this discovery, we decided to create a vegan multivitamin with just the essentials. Working with an expert formulator and a registered dietician (with a science degree and a medical internship), we created the perfect vegan multivitamin, with the very best ingredients. And to keep the cost low, we designed it as a subscription, which allows us to sell ingredients that could cost as much as $90, for just $30.

Bondi Beach, where all three co-founders grew up surfing and swimming.

This is just the beginning. Our mission is to help the planet shift to a plant-based diet and we have a lot of work ahead of us.

We believe that the future is vegan and we’d like to invite you to come along for the ride.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I take this?

A vegan diet is better for your health on just about every level, but there's one key nutrient that we get less of: B12. Roughly 20% of the US population are deficient in B12, but for vegans it could be up to 92%. That's because B12 is made by bacteria, which either lives in dirt or inside animals stomachs, neither of which your average vegan eats!

A B12 deficiency can lead to serious issues, like irreversible nerve damage, so you need to ensure you're getting enough. A B12 deficiency can also take as long as three years to set in, so even if your levels are still normal, if you're on a strict vegan diet, you must supplement. That's why almost every doctor with an understanding of vegan nutrition will recommend vegans take a B12 supplement.

There are two other important nutrients that most people in the U.S., vegan or not, aren't getting enough of and that's Omega-3 and Vitamin D. Omega-3 is extremely important to look after our brains and we need vitamin D to have healthy bones.
What sets is apart though isn't just what we include, it's also what we don't include. Most multivitamins contain ingredients that vegans already get a lot more of than the average person, like vitamins E and K and Magnesium. That's because you can get these vitamins and minerals by simply eating a healthy diet, with lots of fruit and vegetables. There are some supplements in particular like Iron that can actually be dangerous to take if you already have sufficient levels, so you should be aware of any multivitamin that contains it.

Finally, unlike most vitamin brands, we're 100% vegan and cruelty-free. Our mission is to help the planet shift to a plant-based diet and we care about our impact on the environment, which is why we're also the only vegan multivitamin to use 100% recycled and recyclable bottles and mailers.

Can't I just get B12 from nutritional yeast, Omega-3 from flax seeds and vitamin D from the sun?

Yes and no. Let's start with B12. There are no vegan food sources that contain B12 and any that claim to be are fortified with it as a supplement, which means the company sprinkles the supplement onto the food. This includes nutritional yeast, which means that B12 doesn't naturally exist in nutritional yeast, it's still just a supplement.

The problem with depending on fortified foods for B12 is that it can be hard to measure how much you're actually getting, which is why almost all doctors will recommend vegans take a B12 supplement.

The three major Omega-3 fatty acids are ALA, EPA and DHA. Flaxseeds, chia seeds and walnuts are a great source of ALA. Once we eat these foods, some of the ALA will be transformed in our bodies to EPA and DHA, but it's only a very small amount and we'd need to eat a lot of chia seeds and flax seeds on a daily basis to try and ensure we have sufficient levels. Furthermore, some people with certain genetics can't make the conversion at all.

From the age of 20, our brains begin to shrink each year. The good news is that EPA and DHA help stop the shrinkage and protect our brain. That's why nutrition experts like Dr Michael Greger recommends that everyone take an EPA and DHA rich algae-derived Omega-3 supplement, like ours. You can see his video here: https://nutritionfacts.org/video/should-vegans-take-dha-to-preserve-brain-function/

Finally, it's true that you can get vitamin D from the sun, but the reality is that most of us aren't getting enough, particularly during the colder months or if we work indoors. Prolonged sun exposure can also carry risks with it too. What's more, the further north you live and the darker your skin, the harder is it to get enough vitamin D. You need at least 15 - 30 minutes of direct midday sunlight, but during the winter months you need even more. The good news is that our vitamin D is plant-based, 100% vegan (from lichen) and has all the same benefits.

Is it organic and non-GMO?

Our multivitamin is produced without the use of any pesticides or herbicides, so in that sense it's organic. However, the organic certification board has yet to create a certification process for marine plants, like algae, which is what we use for our Omega-3, so it's not yet possible for us to have the product organic certified. Rest assured, as soon as the USDA creates a certification framework, we'll be the first to sign up!

Finally, for those that are concerned, it's also non-GMO.

What kind of B12 do you use?

We use the Methylcobalamin form, due in part to this 2017 study https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28223907 which suggested that Methylcobalamin may be easier for the body to use (more bioavailable) than the cyanocobalamin form, which the body must convert. Furthermore, there isn't much of a difference in the price of the two forms anymore.

However, there's a considerable amount of literature now to support the efficacy of either form, so we don't actively promote one form over the other, as we think that would be misleading.

Is it safe?

As vegans, we built this product initially for our own consumption (and our families), so quality is of the upmost importance to us.

We work with an FDA-regulated and a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certified facility within the USA. Our facility has an intense quality control and raw ingredient supplier vetting process. We also carry out third party testing and make the results available to our customers.

Why do you include Carrageenan?

One of the ingredients used to create our vegan soft gel (capsule) is Carrageenan.

While we know it’s a frequently debated ingredient, we haven’t seen any compelling evidence to show an adverse effect in human trials, particularly when weighed up against the benefits of delivering these nutrients in a vegan capsule.

Carrageenan is FDA approved and regulated. It has also been reviewed by the Joint Expert Committee by the United Nations and the World Health Organization, both of whom found that it was “not of concern”. The European Food Safety Authority also said that there is “no evidence of adverse effects in humans from exposure to food-grade carrageenan”.

We also haven’t come across a superior alternative. While tapioca is occasionally used in vegan capsules, it can only be used to deliver certain formulas and isn’t suitable for our Omega-3, D3, and B12.
